D135 School Board Meeting 5/14/12

If you missed last night’s board meeting, here are some key points that were discussed:

  • It was noted that a Superintendent was not found in the search that was conducted.  According to John Carmody, “We could not get comfortable with any one of the candidates.”
  • Looking for an over 10 year commitment from an incoming candidate.
  • Laura Berry, Director of Curriculum, reported that they are continuing to receive updates from each school in regards to curriculum.
  • Laura Berry also reported that there is a possibility of a Math pilot in grades 6-8 next year as well.
  • Dennis Soustek mentioned a FOIA request and said “We are in the process of addressing that request.”  There was no mention of what that request entailed.
  • A new Speech Pathologist was hired for Prairie School, no to exceed $63/hour.
  • Tracy Marc was hired to replace Bridget McGuiggan.  She is a mom from Orland Park and has a degree from Columbia.
  • Lynn Zeder was hired and voted in as Assistant Director of Curriculum. (Board member Mary Bragg motioned to table the vote but it was not seconded, so the vote proceeded.)
  • A book “Peak” was introduced into curriculum for eh 6th-8th grades and is available for viewing at the administration center.
  • Joe LaMargo mentioned his concern for state transportation funding cuts.  John Reiniche added that the state is pulling from transportation to make up for debt and possibly fund pensions and we need to keep a close eye on where the state is pulling funding from.  A bit of discussion followed about the state moving to stop funding transportation completely for districts like ours where the distance to school is minimal.
  • Dennis Soustek has added a second Curriculum Presentation to be held Wednesday, May 23rd at 6:30pm at the admin center.

We hope to see you Monday at 9am for our next CARE135 meeting.  Confirmed guests are Dr. Laura Berry and Lynn Zeder and we will be discussing curriculum.

CARE 135 will hold a meeting tomorrow morning, 9am in the board room at the Admin Center (15100 94th Ave).  Invited guests include District 135 board of education members Tom Cunningham and Joe LaMargo.  We will be talking about technology in the classroom, teacher pension, new curriculum, the superintendent search and more.  An open forum setting will allow for attendees to ask questions as well.  Hope to see you there!
